Day 1 After arriving in Addis Ababa, we will visit the Ethnographic museums and St George's Church during the morning. Then, we'll drive to the Rift Valley lake of Langano. Here you can trek or go for a short walk in the beautiful surroundings, do some bird-watching, explore the area on horseback, or have a relaxing swim in the only bilharzias-free lake. Stay overnight at Wenney eco-lodge, secluded in a natural paradise at the shore of lake Langano and the Munessa forest.
Day 2 After an early start, we will drive through spectacular surroundings to Arbaminch (500 km). On the way, you'll visit the Wolayta people's villages and get a taste of their culture. We will then go on to Chencha to see the unique homes and traditions of the Dorze people. We'll visit the false banana cultivations, from which they extract their traditional bread (the Kotcho), the weaving works and more. We will arrive at Arbaminch late in the afternoon. Stay overnight at the Swaynes hotel, with spectacular views over Chamo & Abaya lakes.
Day 3 On the way to Jinka, we will see the Konso, Derase, Tsemay, Ari and Benna people. We'll make a stop to visit the village of the Konso people, who are famous for their terraced farming and have unique traditions. Stay overnight at a hotel in Jinka (choices are Tebekew or Resort).
Day 4 We will drive to the Mago National Park, admiring different animals and birds as you travel. Then, we will proceed to visit the Mursi people and their villages. Here, women used to put round plates into their lips because it was considered to be beautiful. Then, we will drive to Jinka and visit the cultural museum during the afternoon. Stay overnight in a hotel in Jinka.
Day 5 We'll drive to KeyAfer village to visit the very colourful market of the Tsemay and Erbore people. Then we will go on to Turmi to visit the Hamer people and their villages. Stay overnight at Turmi Evangadi lodge.
Day 6 We will drive to visit the Karo people, who are famed for their body decorations. From Kortcho village you'll enjoy also a spectacular view over the River Omo. We will drive back to Turmi, and with luck you will be able to watch a marriage ceremony of the Hamer people, with the bucking bull or Evangadi dances. If no ceremonies are taking place, we’ll take time to visit a traditional village and soak up the culture. Stay overnight at Turmi Evangadi lodge.
Day 7 We'll drive to Dimeka village to see the very colourful Saturday market of the Hamer, Karo and Tsemay people. Then we'll visit the Weyto river valley. In the afternoon, we will drive through the areas of the Konso and Borena people, to reach Yabelo. Stay overnight at Yabelo motel or Borena Lodge.
Day 8 We will leave early in the morning to drive to the ElSod crater, where from a marshy lake the Borena men extract salt. We will visit the singing wells and a Borena village. Then, we will head on to Moyale, where you can get all the necessary borders permits. Stay overnight at the Kalacha camp.
Day 9 We will go on to the Chalbi desert, travelling through beautiful scenery and passing villages of the Gabra people, finally arriving at the village of Kalacha. Stay overnight at Kalacha in tents or a local hotel.
Day 10 We will leave early and drive to Loyangalani, on the shore of Lake Turkana. You can admire the Turkana and Elmolo people and their fascinating villages. Stay overnight at the Oasis Lodge or camping at Turkana.
Day 11 We will travel to the Samburu National Park. In the afternoon, we'll have a game drive in the park, which is one of the richest in fauna and flora (including the Big Five) in Kenya. The dramatic, 104-square-kilometre landscape features rocky battlements, dry riverbeds and thorn scrub. As for wildlife, Samburu offers sanctuary to the endangered Grévy's zebra, the rare beisa Oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich, whilst large herds of elephant roam the hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening. Stay overnight at a lodge in the park.
Day 12 We'll enjoy an early-morning game drive in the Samburu National Park. Then we will make our way to Lake Nakuru for the large number of flamingoes and more visits. Stay overnight in a lodge.
Day 13 We will drive to Nairobi through the scenic Great Rift Valley. You can have dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant, and we will take you back to the airport for your departure. We also suggest extending your holiday to include a trip to the fantastic beaches in Mombasa or Malindi.
